STEP THREE:
STORYBOARD
& INTEGRATE

With the direction for the learning outcomes & medium established, it was time to thematically, conceptually, & aesthetically build out the project.

MY DEVELOPMENT PROCESS:
 A. Simple storyboard a few concepts
 B. Detailed storyboard 1-2 main contesters
 C. Begin integration with design and curriculum tools and writing software

SIMPLE
STORYBOARD

My first storyboards are sketches with margins, notes, and figures with the primary purpose of brainstorming.
Note: The imperfection of the sketching process keeps me from spending significant time on design and aesthetic without clear direction.
There were other samples, but these represent the two primary sketches I was debating between: a space-themed game/challenge and a sleek, modern theme with a more straightforward layout.

DETAILED
STORYBOARD

For my detailed storyboards, I used Adobe XD as a canvas for my project, using other software for more specific design elements (Illustrator, Canva, etc).
Note: I find it really essential to keep color palettes and font schemes consistent throughout the project, and the storyboard is the most consistent place for me to keep track of these changes and details.
Ultimately, I decided that the modern theme would be the most conducive for this project.

INTEGRATION
IDEA ONE

IDEA ONE: ADOBE CAPTIVATE
My first idea for integrating this theme into a learning project was to use the "slide deck" format of Adobe Captivate as a survey and quiz tool. The end result would be a personalized quiz that informed the student which subjects should be prioritized in their study.
Pros
  • Personalized quiz
  • Simple layout
  • Easy application for LMS integration
Cons
  • Poor interactivity
  • Custom elements are not simple for responsive design (across platforms)
  • Large size of images & PDFs causes lag

INTEGRATION
IDEA TWO

IDEA TWO: RISE 360
After running into several roadblocks with the slide deck format, I adjusted to an "Articulate Rise 360" course format. While this format is typically used for job training, I found the rise "lesson" interface to fit this project well.
Pros
  • Great interactivity
  • Easily integrated aesthetic
  • Accessible navigation
  • Easily handle large images & PDFs
  • Familiar website format for student interaction
Cons
  • No personalized quiz readout
  • Some limited customizability

THE DEVELOPED PRODUCT

NOTE: this screen grab is unprocessed (the pixelation and clarity are not reflective of the product at this phase).
At the end of the DEVELOPMENT phase, the product had progressed from a few seedling ideas sketched on paper into a fully fledged, interactive course. At this point the project only needed some final feedback from the client and some polishing of details before moving to the IMPLEMENTATION phase.
Here are a few of the decisions made along the way:
  • A sleek, modern theme represented the project better than a gamified space version
  • A simple survey that provided an SAT overview was chosen over a personalized quiz readout (due to the time constraints of the project and the actual learning objectives)
  • A "Rise 360" course was chosen over an "Adobe Captivate" platform (due to interactivity and design preference)
